an (indecent) proposal – will you dine out with me?

blogging has become a a bit of an obsession for me, and i swear, half of this dangerous addiction is the collection of food blogging events , like is my blog burning, does my blog look good in this?, sugar high fridays, wine blogging wednesdays, and the two i just participated in for the first time this week, end of the month eggs on toast extravaganza (eotmeote) and paper chef. each event is slightly different, but the basic premise is that a host sets up a theme, simple rules, and a deadline.

sarah’s paper chef entry – goat cheese wontons

for example, paper chef is a monthly (friendly) competition (i just participated in paper chef no. 5!). on the first friday of the month, owen of tomatilla!, like iron chef’s chairman kaga, announces four secret ingredients, which he has usually narrowed down from a slew of nominations from other floggers. participants have 72 hours (the weekend) to create a delicious delight, then post their entry on their own blog before the 72 hours are up. participants don’t even have to have their own blog – they can just email their entry to the host. so see? everyone can play. the previous month’s winner is the judge, and posts a winner, who gets to be the judge the following month.

eotmeote no 5 entry – stuffed bagel

sometimes, it’s not a competition, just a cyber buffet of the floggers’ food fun, like eotmeote (my entry for the most recent edition was a stuffed bagel), or sugar high fridays. while eotmeote is always hosted by the creators, cook sister! and spiceblog who take turns every other month, sugar high fridays, the original idea of the domestic goddess, has a different blogger host each month. the host selects a theme, and on a given friday of the month, bloggers share-post their sweet treats made with the theme ingredient.

isn’t that fun? and what a wonderful way to connect all those food floggers out there inthe flogosphere.

so where i go with this after a little lesson in online flogging events…quite a handful of online food events for blogs that cook, but what about the blogs that dine out? (mine is, of course, a happy combination). i’ve thought about this for a while now, and i’d love to do an event for all the bloggers who are more focused on dining out. these are the bloggers who experience the good, the bad, and the utterly un-eatable out in the restaurant scene. they surreptitiously sneak photos of food while their dining companions hide under their napkins in embarassment during a foodie flashbulb fantasy. they are the diners who snag a copy of the menu on the way out, and remember every bite of buttered bread, every taste of tender tri-tip, every single delicious detail of their dining experience. the atmosphere. the service. the prices. the food. the food. the food. and then they rush right back to the closest computer to share photos, rant about service and rave about the desserts. and we all get to read and and dine vicariously through the photos and stories.

here’s my (indecent) proposal: each month, there is a dining out theme, then on the last thursday of the month, all the participating bloggers can post their experiences on their blogs (or email them to me), and little ol’ me will round it all up in one summary post here at the delicious life. the theme could be anything as simple as a type of cuisine like thai or french, a dining-style like izakaya or “eating with hands,” a specific dish or ingredient like “something layered” or superb salmon. we could *gasp!* even get crazy with themes like “naughty noshing” or “breakfast for dinner.” half the fun, i think, is thinking of themes! i would of course, try not to just select a specific restaurant since many bloggers are limited to a certain area, as this would of course, be open to the entire universe, so pay attention martians!

it wouldn’t be a competition. no, it’s just a chance for the dining out set to come together in cyberspace and share their experiences, and, if there’s a challenging or obscure theme, see what kind of creative places everyone ends up. and yes, it’s a bit of a selfish thing because i love reading about other people’s dining experiences, especially around la la land.

i’d love to get something going for this month, and gather around the chef’s table (haha!) by thursday, april 28.

so what do you say? would you do it, hm? for one million dollars? :)

I would! Of course. I don’t have a blog, but hey. Any excuse to go eat nice, and sometimes experimental food. :)
